Estimating Greeting Card Sales: PBS LearningMedia

: PBS LearningMedia

In this Cyberchase video segment, Harry responds to a "Get Rich Quick" ad and finds himself selling Cheesy Greeting Cards. Unfortunately, he has trouble selling all of the cards to friends and relatives, so he sets up a stand on the sidewalk. When he uses a calculator to find the total amount of money he has collected, he is happy to learn it is over $250. But when he looks at the stack of unsold cards, he questions his calculation. He decides to check his total using estimation, and he soon realizes he had made an error on his calculator.

In this video segment from Cyberchase, Inez is baking 50 cookies for her class and each cookie has to have four jelly beans on top. Inez has a jar full of jelly beans. She knows she needs at least 200 jelly beans, but rather than count all of the jellybeans, she decides to estimate to see if she has enough.

Intersecting Lines

Intersecting lines definition:  The point at which two lines (or curves) touch, even if the lines/curves do not cross each other, is called their intersection. The lines (or curves) are said to intersect at that point. So, the corner of a rectangle is a point of intersection of two of the sides. Intersecting lines are lines that share a point in common (or, less commonly described as "intersecting," coincide entirely).

What's in a word?  inter- (between or among, mutually or together) + -sect (cut) = "mutually cutting"; two roads "cut" (across) each other at their intersection.

Rows and Columns in an Array

Columns run vertically, like the columns of a building. In these pictures the first and third columns are indicated by a red loop.

Rows run horizontally. The fourth and second rows are looped in these pictures.

These are all rectangles: Image:RectanglesNew.png

Arrays are always in a rectangular shape.
